Astigmatism: modern treatment methods
Astigmatism is a pathological state of the eyes of the eye in which there is a violation of the sphereness of the cornea. With such a disease, objects are distorted and a person sees some contours quite clearly, while others are completely blurry.
With congenital astigmatism, when the deviation range does not exceed 0.5 diopters, no violations are felt at all, and the disease itself belongs to the “functional”. However, vision can worsen quite strongly and sharply. Such patients at an early age require the treatment of astigmatism using special cylindrical (spherocylindrical) glasses. It is in such manipulations that the main work of the doctor with amblyopia, strabismus and visual discomfort is the main work of the doctor.
Why such a disease develops, has not yet been accurately established, in most cases astigmatism is inherited and innate in nature, and is detected in childhood. But the disease may appear much later, yielding to the result of an injury or operation. It remains very important that if the family has patients with astigmatism, then a mandatory examination of the child is required by a qualified ophthalmologist even without any violations in his vision. It is the timely detection of pathology that will allow the treatment of astigmatism in the child by minimal means.
As for modern methods by which astigmatism can be adjusted, these include glasses, contact lenses and the use of laser correction. The most common method is the use of points, however, their purpose and choice must be approached very seriously. In the treatment of astigmatism, it is necessary to use special cylindrical lenses that are divided into negative and positive.
The desired type of treatment ophthalmologist prescribes depending on the type of disease. Glasses are not able to ensure the complete elimination of discomfort that this disease brings with them, because they limit lateral vision, and are also able to disrupt spatial perception and stereoscopic effect. And if they were also incorrectly selected, then there is a completely opposite action, which leads to constant overwork of the eyes and significant progression of astigmatism.
Contact lenses can only be used with minor deviations, less than three diopters. They are also prescribed by an ophthalmologist after a preliminary examination and they are called thorce.
As for the laser treatment of astigmatism, it is used only in relation to adults who have a stable form of this disease.
